About Canberra

The city of Canberra, also known as the Australian Capital Territory, is the capital of Australia and the eleventh-most-populous city in the country. It is located in the southernmost part of the Australian Capital Territory and is surrounded by the national park of Canberra. The city is home to many government institutions and houses the nation’s legislative branch, the Parliament of Australia. The city has a rich history and is surrounded by natural beauty.

When Australia became a self-governing colony in 1901, it chose Canberra as its capital. This was because the Australian Capital Territory had more space, greenery, and safety compared to other cities. The original name for the city was Canberry, but that was changed to Canberra when the city became an official capital. Some local Indigenous Australians named the area ‘Yawri’ which translates to ‘place of meeting.’ Over time, this name changed to ‘Canberra,’ which means ‘meeting place.’

Belconnen Council, Inner South Canberra Council, Gungahlin Council, North Canberra Council, Weston Creek Council, and Woden Valley Council are some famous council areas. These are the most developed council areas in Canberra.
